Abstract

In this paper we present an enumerative method to derive analytic expressions for burst error statistics of hidden Markov channel (HMC) models with an arbitrary number of states. It is demonstrated that the error weight distribution can be analytically described from the distributions of intervals between errors. The study of the statistical description of the error process has immediate applications in the modeling of real channels, and in the designi of coding schemes for channels with memory.
